This seminar invites students to investigate the history of a particular cultural phenomenon, construction, or formation and its representation in art, film, literature, or other media, as it relates to a diversity of human experience over an extended period and to communicate orally, visually, and in writing a well-informed, well-reasoned view of its continuing impact on present-day American culture. Examples of topics that might be offered in this seminar include (but are not limited to): race as a cultural construct; the invention of capitalism; from empire to cultural imperialism; democracy in America; the legacy of slavery; the American dream). JBC 035. INTEGRATED SEMINAR IN MEDIA AND STATISTICAL LITERACY. (0 Credits)
This seminar invites students to investigate the way mass media has used and continues to use (and misuse) data to represent political, economic, and social reality. Students will engage in comparative analyses of the way different sources of information use statistical data differently to advance particular arguments, perspectives, and interpretations to the public. In doing so, they will demonstrate an ability to discern and articulate bias, error, and manipulation in media representation. The seminar will culminate in a collaborative presentation of findings drawn from a comparative analysis of multiple sources’ representation of the same issue. Examples of topics that might be offered include (but are not limited to): immigration politics and policy; pandemic response and analysis; political polling; national educational policy and testing; media and social science; the rise of “fake news.” This seminar is offered to first-year Bright College students each spring and is a pre-requisite for JBC 055. This 35-to-40-hour internship with a local business, organization, or enterprise allows students to hone their abilities to work in a professional environment, collaborate with co-workers, and put their learning to use in a non-collegiate environment. In the spring of their first year, Bright College students work with the Professional and Academic Support Specialist to identify an internship opportunity. Students employed at a business, enterprise, or organization that align with Bright College learning outcomes may opt to use regular employment to fulfill this course with approval from the Professional and Academic Support Specialist and their supervisor.

In this seminar, students will gain competence as systems thinkers as they investigate and map the interrelationship among globally interconnected systems of social organization, power, and the distribution of goods, on the one hand, and such scientifically inflected systems as the natural environment, public health, and healthcare, on the other. Students will learn about the influence of policy, history, and the physical and biological forces on the dynamics governing—and created by—these systems. Working in collaboration with their peers, participants will engage in direct scientific inquiry and data collection and will map these systems as steps toward designing interventions to improve identified outcomes. Examples of topics this seminar might pursue include (but are not limited to): global response to pandemics; global water policy and health; eco-tourism; globalism and the green economy; the politics and economics of healthcare in the global south; national health care in a global environment. This practicum offers those pursuing the associate degree in Integrated Arts, Sciences, and Humanities the opportunity to integrate their knowledge, skills, and non-cognitive competencies to design and carry out a multi-faceted, interdisciplinary project culminating in a demonstration, screening, presentation, campaign, or other large-scale, multi-modal project in partnership with a community-serving, civic, environmental, or arts organization. Working in teams, participants will conduct primary or secondary research into a topic of public interest and present their work in a forum that engages, informs, inspires, or otherwise effectively shapes the work of the partnering organization. Such projects might include strategy proposals; podcasts supported by written and visual digital content; multi-modal public awareness campaigns; documentary film; policy proposals supported by contributions to local and regional print media; curated exhibitions; and publicity or fund-raising campaigns. In all cases, participants will be primarily responsible for the design and execution of the core project itself in response to the needs and mission of the partnering organization. This practicum offers those pursuing the associate degree in Business, Organizational, and Professional Studies the chance to work in teams with partnering businesses or organizations to develop, implement, and carry through a focused project that will serve the real-world needs of the community partner(s). While the exact nature of the project will vary from year to year, depending on the needs of particular partnering organizations, the practicum will require the integration of the entire suite of higher-order competencies learners will have developed during their first year and half with Bright College along with a number of the knowledges and skills acquired in courses leading up to the practicum. Projects will hone students’ abilities to apply process and systems proficiencies, data and statistical literacies, planning and project management aptitudes inherent in professional studies. Possible projects might include providing research for a marketing, fund-raising, or public awareness campaign; building organizational structures and workflows; producing and promoting music recordings and albums; creating policy libraries or other accessible data and information resources; supporting community outreach and engagement efforts; or creating and refining business plans.
