This course is specifically designed to provide individual and group instruction in healthy and effective acting techniques for vocal music majors and minors, performance preparation and aria coaching, rehearsal skills and techniques for scene study and successful auditioning. Students will learn how to effectively research, rehearse and perform opera roles and arias in a variety of languages, time periods and styles. This laboratory course, in conjunction with MUS 171, Studio Voice, is designed to provide additional instruction to voice majors in the areas of musicianship, language and performance to further prepare them for the professional world. Students will gain knowledge and strive for competency in the following areas: character interpretation and stage deportment; score study; interpretation of the music according to tradition, period, style, etc. (musical context); language and text comprehension; diction and foreign language skills (classical singing languages -- Italian, German, French); assistance with ornamentation and variations consistent with period and tradition; study of recitativo (in particular, XVII-XIX Century Italian recitativi); preparation for auditions and performance.
