Japanese Language and Culture Minor
Program Overview
One of the world's largest economies, Japan is known for its cutting-edge science and technology, as well as its rich cultural history and modern pop culture.
With demand in areas of national security, diplomacy, and global business, the Japanese language is one of 12 languages designated by the U.S. as a less commonly taught critical language.
Students in the Japanese minor program at Drake University develop authentic oral and written communication skills with culturally appropriate expressions and manners. Students deepen their understanding of both traditional and contemporary Japanese culture through a wide range of topics, including daily life, art, history, religion, pop culture, healthcare, and current social issues. The Japanese minor can be effectively combined with a variety of majors and minors, making it a valuable addition to many areas of study.
Drake University offers study-abroad opportunities that align with students' goals and schedules. Many Japanese minors choose to go abroad, where they further develop their language skills and cultural knowledge through immersive, real-world experiences.
Each year, Drake graduates with Japanese minors earn competitive scholarships, such as the Fulbright Scholarship, successfully pursue graduate studies, and are accepted into prestigious programs, including the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.
